Reading Time Calculator
Enter word count and reading speed (WPM); optionally enter pages for a per-page check.
How long will this take to read?
Reading time estimates help schedule articles, chapters and study blocks. Divide word count by your words-per-minute (WPM) pace — many silent adult readers sit near 200–250 WPM, while dense technical prose runs slower. Optional page count shows implied words per page when a PDF only exposes pages. Skimming and rereading change wall-clock time; treat the output as focused reading, not including note-taking. For related pacing on audiovisual media see length tools in craft, and for calendar blockers use add time once you know the minutes.
Worked example
2,500 words ÷ 200 WPM = 12.5 minutes. On 10 pages that is 250 words per page.
Limits and assumptions
Constant WPM. Does not model diagrams, code blocks or re-read loops.
Frequently asked questions
What is WPM?
Words per minute — how many words you typically read in sixty seconds of focused reading.
How do I count words?
Paste into a word processor word count, or use your CMS stats. Exclude reference lists if you will skip them.
Speech vs silent reading?
Spoken narration is often slower than silent reading — lower WPM if estimating listen time.
Why optional pages?
Some documents only show page counts; words÷pages estimates density so you can sanity-check the word field.
