What do I need on the final?

If you have 62% so far and the exam is 40% of the module, a 70% overall means you need 82% on the exam. This calculator rearranges weighted averages so you know the score still required on remaining assessments. Over 100% means the target is out of reach with the remaining weight; under 0% means you have already secured the target. Always confirm weights on your module handbook — resits, capped marks and must-pass components can change the story. Combine multiple remaining components into one remaining weight, or update your ‘current’ mark after each result. Not academic advice from your institution and not a replacement for talking to your tutor if you are near a borderline classification. Students sharing modules across joint honours programmes must confirm which assessments feed which module code. Mitigating circumstances and extensions change timing more than weights, but capped marks after misconduct findings can make a target unreachable. Use the calculator as a planning aid, then agree revision priorities with your academic tutor.

Worked example

Coursework so far averages 64% and already represents 60% of the module. You want 70% overall and the exam is the remaining 40%. Required exam mark = (0.70 − 0.64×0.60) ÷ 0.40 = 79%. If the exam is capped at a pass on resit, that 79% may be unavailable — check the handbook before planning.

Limits and assumptions

Assumes linear weighted averages without discretionary boards or plagiarism penalties. Pass/fail gates and ‘must pass exam’ rules are not encoded. Always defer to official module documentation.

Frequently asked questions

What if the result is above 100%?

The overall target cannot be reached with the remaining weight. Adjust the target or focus on other modules.

How do multiple remaining components work?

Combine their weights into one remaining percentage, or run the calculator for each component in turn with updated ‘current’ marks.

Do capped resits change the maths?

Yes — if a resit is capped at the pass mark, use that cap as the maximum you can enter for that component.

Can I aim for a classification boundary?

Yes — set the overall target to the boundary (for example 70% for distinction) and read the required remaining score.

What if weights do not add to 100%?

Re-check the handbook. Some modules exclude formative work; only sum summative weights.
