What is GPA and how do I calculate it?

GPA stands for Grade Point Average — a single number that summarises how you did across courses. A weighted GPA multiplies each course’s grade points by its credit hours, sums those quality points, and divides by total credits. Courses with zero credits are ignored so you can leave spare slots empty. Enter grades on your institution’s scale (4.0, 5.0, percentage-mapped points, etc.) — the calculator does not convert letter grades automatically. Four courses cover a typical term slice; run it twice for more modules and combine credits manually. Study planning alongside grades lives in the study time calculator.

Worked example

Grades 3.7×3cr, 3.3×4cr, 4.0×3cr → quality points 11.1+13.2+12.0 = 36.3; credits 10; GPA = 3.63.

Limits and assumptions

No repeated-course forgiveness or major/minor weighting beyond the credits you enter. Pass/fail courses with zero points should be omitted.

Frequently asked questions

What does GPA mean?

Grade Point Average. Schools turn letter grades (A, B, C…) into numbers (often A=4.0) and average them, usually weighted by how many credit hours each course is worth.

What are credit hours?

How “heavy” a course is on your transcript — a 4-credit module counts more toward GPA than a 1-credit seminar.

Letter grades?

Convert using your school’s chart (e.g. A=4.0, B=3.0) before entering points — this tool does not guess your chart.

Is 4.0 the maximum?

Only if your scale says so. Some places use 5.0 or percentage-based points — enter whatever your registrar uses.
