How long will the journey take?

Trip duration is distance divided by average speed; the inverse finds the speed you need to cover a distance in a fixed time. Toggle between solving for time or speed, keep distance units consistent with the site preference, and remember averages ignore lights, borders and fuel stops. A 180 km journey at 90 km/h is two hours; needing that distance in 1.5 hours wants 120 km/h average. For the classic three-way solver see speed distance time, and for clock arrival after a duration use arrival time.

Worked example

180 distance units at 90 / h → 2.0 h. Solving for speed with 180 in 2 h → 90 / h.

Limits and assumptions

Constant average speed. No traffic model, elevation or rest breaks.

Frequently asked questions

Metric or miles?

Match the site distance unit. Speed is distance units per hour.

When do I solve for speed?

When you know how long you can travel and need the average pace required.

Include stops?

Either add stop time after, or lower average speed to fold them in.

How is this different from speed-distance-time?

Same family of maths with a travel-focused two-mode toggle; the other tool also solves for distance.
