How long is my commute really?

Commute cost is not only fuel or tickets — hours on the road matter when comparing jobs or hybrid calendars. One-way time is distance ÷ average speed, converted to minutes, plus a buffer for walking to the station, parking or school runs. Round trip doubles that; weekly hours multiply by commuting days; a rough yearly figure assumes about 46 working weeks. Average speed beats map distance alone because traffic and transfers dominate. This is not live traffic or timetable data. Pair time with money using the commute cost and car vs train calculators.

Worked example

18 km at 35 km/h is about 31 minutes, plus a 10-minute buffer → ~41 minutes one-way. Five days a week ≈ 6.8 hours; across ~46 weeks ≈ 313 hours a year.

Limits and assumptions

Constant average speed only. No live congestion, delays or multi-leg timetable logic.

Frequently asked questions

How do I model door-to-door time?

Put walking, waiting and parking into the buffer minutes each way.

What if I drive then take a train?

Use a blended average speed for the whole door-to-door trip, or split the journey into segments offline and add the times.

How should hybrid workers set days?

Enter only the days you actually commute; remote days stay out of the weekly total.

Why ~46 weeks for the yearly figure?

It leaves rough headroom for annual leave. Adjust mentally if your leave pattern differs.
