How long between two times?

Duration between two clock times is end minutes minus start minutes on a 24-hour clock; if the result is negative, the shift wrapped past midnight and twenty-four hours are added. Enter times as HH:MM (for example 09:30 and 17:15). The result shows hours and minutes, total minutes and decimal hours — handy for parking tickets, study blocks and rota checks. Unpaid lunch breaks are not subtracted automatically; shorten the end time or adjust mentally. Multi-day calendar spans need a date-aware tool instead. For weekday-only business spans try the business days calculator.

Worked example

09:30 to 17:15 → 7 h 45 min (465 minutes, 7.75 decimal hours) on the same day.

Limits and assumptions

Clock times only. A single overnight wrap is supported; multi-day ranges are not.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need 24-hour format?

Yes — enter HH:MM such as 17:00 rather than 5:00 pm.

How do overnight shifts work?

If end is earlier than start (for example 22:00 to 06:00), the calculator adds 24 hours so the duration stays positive.

What about unpaid breaks?

Subtract break minutes yourself or set a later start / earlier end so the span matches paid time only.

Why show decimal hours?

Payroll and spreadsheets often want hours as a decimal (7.75) instead of 7 h 45 min.
