Hours and minutes ↔ decimal
Timesheets and billing systems often want decimal hours (7.5) while clocks and diaries use hours:minutes (7:30). Convert HH:MM → decimal as hours + minutes/60, or decimal → HH:MM by taking the whole hours and rounding the fractional part × 60 to the nearest minute. Watch rounding when clients bill to the tenth or quarter hour — a few minutes either way can matter across a long month. Related converters include time duration for spans between clock times, and billable hours when turning time into fees.
Worked example
7 hours 30 minutes → 7 + 30/60 = 7.50 h. From 7.5 decimal back → 7:30. From 7.33 → about 7:20 after minute rounding.
Limits and assumptions
Minutes round to the nearest minute from decimal. Does not enforce employer-specific increments (e.g. 6-minute or 15-minute rules) unless you round inputs yourself.
Frequently asked questions
Why is 7:30 equal to 7.5 not 7.30?
Decimal hours divide minutes by 60. 0.30 would mean 0.30×60 ≈ 18 minutes, not 30.
What about 7:59?
Decimal ≈ 7.98 h. Tiny rounding differences can appear when converting back.
Can I enter more than 60 minutes?
Minutes are clamped to 0–59 in HH:MM → decimal mode; put overflow into the hours field.
How do tenths of an hour work?
0.1 h = 6 minutes. Round your diary to the increment your payroll expects before converting.
