How much life is commuting?
Commuting quietly consumes years of clock time. Enter one-way minutes, days per week and working years; weekly hours = (one-way × 2 × days) ÷ 60, yearly hours assume about 46 working weeks, and lifetime hours = yearly × years. An optional hourly value turns that time into a blunt “what if I valued it” money figure — not a wage claim. Use it when comparing remote work, nearer housing or faster routes. Day-to-day timing sits in commute time; cash costs of travel are in commute cost.
Worked example
35 minutes one-way, 5 days/week → (35×2×5)/60 ≈ 5.83 h/week. ×46 weeks ≈ 268 h/year. Over 10 years ≈ 2,683 h (about 112 days of 24-hour clock). At £20/h that time “values” around £53,660.
Limits and assumptions
Uses ~46 weeks/year — adjust mentally for long leave. Not live traffic; averages only. Hybrid WFH days need a lower days-per-week input.
Frequently asked questions
Why 46 weeks not 52?
It approximates weekends off plus typical annual leave. If you commute every week, raise the mental factor.
Is the hourly value my salary?
Optional illustration only. Salary already pays for work time; this is a personal comparison aid.

How do I model hybrid work?
Set days per week to the days you actually travel (for example 2 or 3).
