How wide should a book spine be?

Paperback and case-bound spines scale with page count and paper bulk. If you know thickness per sheet in millimetres, spine ≈ (pages ÷ 2) × thickness. If the mill quotes PPI (pages per inch), spine inches ≈ pages ÷ PPI (converted to mm here). Optional wrap is surfaced for cover workflows that add hinge or jacket wrap beyond the text block. Always confirm bulk with your printer’s paper chart — coatings and moisture change caliper. Feed the result into the book cover dimensions calculator for the full flat width, and use print size when checking interior trim separately.

Worked example

200 pages at 0.1 mm per sheet → 100 sheets × 0.1 = 10 mm spine. Same page count at 250 PPI → 200/250 in ≈ 20.3 mm.

Limits and assumptions

Counts pages as sides; verify whether your file’s page count matches the printer’s sheet count. Endpapers and boards add to case-bound builds beyond this text-block estimate.

Frequently asked questions

What is PPI?

Pages per inch — how many printed pages stack in one inch of paper thickness. Higher PPI means thinner paper and a narrower spine for the same page count.

Pages or leaves?

Enter printed sides (what Word calls pages). Leaves are pages÷2 — the thickness path already divides by two.

What if PPI is missing?

Measure a sample stack with a caliper and divide thickness by sheet count for mm per sheet.

Why optional wrap?

Dust jackets and some templates add wrap beyond trim; include it when your cover template requires it.
