Print Bleed Calculator
Enter trim size and bleed on each side to get the full artwork size.
What size with bleed?
Bleed is the extra artwork that extends beyond the trim line so white edges do not show when the guillotine is slightly off. UK and European printers often ask for 3 mm bleed on each side; US templates often use 0.125 in (⅛ in). This calculator turns a finished trim size into the full document size including bleed, and follows the header Metric / Imperial toggle. Set up the file at the full bleed size, keep important content inside the safe area, and still supply trim marks as your printer requests. Related sizing: print size for pixel-to-print dimensions and aspect ratio for shape. Business cards, flyers and book covers all follow the same idea with different templates. Not a substitute for your printer’s pre-press guide. Export PDF/X settings and colour profiles after the geometry is right — bleed will not fix a soft file or the wrong colour space.
Worked example
An A5 flyer trims to 148 × 210 mm. With 3 mm bleed on every side the full artwork is 154 × 216 mm. A 5 mm safe inset means keep critical text inside 138 × 200 mm. If the printer asks for 5 mm bleed instead, the full file becomes 158 × 220 mm.
Limits and assumptions
Assumes uniform bleed on all sides. Die-cuts, folds and spiral binds need template-specific marks. Does not validate resolution or colour.
Frequently asked questions
How much bleed do printers usually want?
Often 3 mm per side in metric, or 0.125 in (⅛ in) in imperial. The header toggle sets that starting figure; always check the job bag or template.
What is a safe zone?
An inset inside the trim where you keep text and logos so they are not clipped.
Do I add bleed to business cards the same way?
Yes — extend background to the bleed box; keep contact text inside the safe zone.
Pixels, millimetres or inches?
Enter trim and bleed in mm or inches using the header unit toggle. Confirm DPI separately with print size.
What if my PDF already looks correct on screen?
Screen preview can hide missing bleed. Check the media box against the printer’s template.
