Labels on an A4 sheet
Label sheets are a grid problem: sheet size, label size, and the gaps between labels decide how many fit — and whether your template matches the pack you bought. Enter sheet width and height, label width and height, plus horizontal and vertical gaps (and margins if your sheet has a border). The calculator returns how many labels fit across and down, and the total per sheet. Useful for checking a mail-merge layout before you waste a box of Avery-style stock. Related layout helpers: aspect ratio and print size when artwork must match print resolution. Round labels and die-cut shapes need the bounding box you actually allocate in the template. Planning only — not a guarantee that every brand’s ‘L7160-equivalent’ clone matches the official pitch. Print one test sheet on plain paper and hold it against a label sheet up to the light before committing the whole mailshot.
Worked example
An A4 sheet (210 × 297 mm) with 63.5 × 38.1 mm labels, 2.5 mm horizontal gap, 0 mm vertical gap, and small side margins might fit 3 across and 7 down = 21 labels — a common office layout. If gaps are wider than you assumed, you may only get 2 across and must redesign the merge template.
Limits and assumptions
Assumes a regular rectangular grid. Round or shaped labels use bounding boxes. Manufacturer tolerances and printer scaling can shift alignment.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my template not match the pack?
Gaps and margins differ between brands even when label size looks the same. Measure a sheet.
Should I include the page margin?
Yes — unprintable margins and the label matrix both reduce usable area.
Can I calculate rolls of labels?
This tool is for flat sheets; rolls need length ÷ label pitch instead.
What about corner radii?
Radius does not change the grid count, but it does affect how close artwork may sit to the edge.
How do I avoid wasting a box?
Print a plain-paper proof and align it over one label sheet before the full run.
