What Percentage Is X of Y
Enter X and Y to see (X÷Y)×100 and Y as a percentage of X.
What percentage is X of Y?
“What percentage is X of Y?” is simply (X ÷ Y) × 100. The reverse — Y as a percentage of X — is equally useful when you flip which value is the reference. Use it for progress bars, portfolio weights, test scores and quick finance checks. Division by zero is rejected when Y (or X for the reverse) is zero. For comparing two values without treating one as a fixed whole, switch to the percentage difference calculator; for markdowns on a price see price decrease.
Worked example
25 of 200 = 12.5%. Conversely 200 of 25 = 800%.
Limits and assumptions
Pure arithmetic — no compounding, tax or weighted averages.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the same as percentage change?
No. Percentage of is a share of a whole. Percentage change measures movement from a baseline to a new value.
Can X be larger than Y?
Yes — results over 100% are valid when the part exceeds the stated whole.
Negative numbers?
Allowed mathematically; interpret signs in context (e.g. losses).
Rounding?
Display rounding does not change the underlying ratio — copy more decimals from the ratio row if needed.
