Split the bill fairly

Even splits are the simplest starting point for housemates, trips and group gifts. Unequal shares (different meals, different room sizes) need a more detailed split — this tool keeps the maths even unless you adjust headcount or totals carefully. Enter the total and how many people pay to see each share. Tips and booking fees belong in the total before dividing. If someone already paid the bill, settle so the payer is reimbursed. For subscriptions you split monthly, see also subscription cost. Weighted splits can be done offline by multiplying the total by each person’s percentage. A personal budget aid — not mediation advice for housemate disputes. Group holidays run smoother when one person collects into a single pot and pays suppliers, then reconciles once, rather than a web of pairwise bank transfers. Screenshot the split so late joiners see the same numbers. If someone drops out mid-trip, recalculate remaining nights rather than arguing about sunk deposits already paid.

Worked example

Weekend cottage £640 including cleaning fee, six people → about £106.67 each. If two guests join only Saturday dinner at an extra £90 restaurant bill split six ways, add £15 each for food rather than stuffing unequal stays into one even rent split without discussion.

Limits and assumptions

Assumes equal shares. Currency conversion on foreign trips is manual. Does not track who is in credit across multiple weekends — use a ledger app for ongoing balances.

Frequently asked questions

What if someone already paid the bill?

Split the total, then settle so the payer is reimbursed their share from everyone else.

Can we weight the split?

This page focuses on even shares. For weighted splits, multiply the total by each person’s percentage offline.

Should tips be included?

Yes if the group shares them — add tip into the total before dividing.

How do couples in a group trip work?

Decide whether you split by person or by paying unit (couple) before dividing — consistency avoids arguments.

What about security deposits?

Hold deposits separately from the shared spend split; refund them when the host returns the money.
