Cost or price per piece
Multipacks, craft kits and bulk project buys hide the true unit cost until you divide total spend by quantity. Enter the pack or project total and the number of pieces to get price per item; optional markup % then applies selling price = unit cost × (1 + markup ÷ 100) and shows revenue if every piece sells at that price. Fold shipping or platform fees into the total when you want a landed unit cost. Leave markup at zero for pure cost checks. For comparing two supermarket packs side by side use unit price comparison; when you only know the shelf price and a claimed markup, recover cost with reverse markup.
Worked example
£24 across 12 items is £2.00 each. At 25% markup the selling price is £2.50 and full-pack revenue would be £30.
Limits and assumptions
Does not add platform or payment fees unless you include them in total cost. Markup here is on cost, not margin on price.
Frequently asked questions
Should shipping sit in the total?
Yes when you want landed cost per piece. Otherwise keep freight out and treat it as a separate line.
Can quantity be fractional?
Yes — useful for metres of ribbon, partial packs or shared bulk bags.
Is markup the same as margin?
No. Markup is a percentage of cost; margin is profit as a share of selling price. See markup vs margin if you need the other framing.
How do I handle VAT?
Work net if you reclaim VAT, or enter gross totals consistently if you price tax-inclusive — do not mix.
