How much tile adhesive?

Tile adhesive need is driven by tiled area, how much each bag covers for your trowel notch, and a waste allowance for uneven substrates and mixing leftovers. Enter area, coverage per bag from the datasheet, waste percent and optional bag price; bags = area with waste ÷ coverage, rounded up. Large-format tiles, notched beds and wavy walls often cut coverage sharply versus the “ideal” chart on the bag — prefer the lower coverage figure when unsure. Primer and grout are separate products. Estimate tile count with the tile calculator and joint fill with the grout calculator once adhesive volume is settled.

Worked example

12 m² with 10% waste → 13.2 m² to cover. At 5 m² per bag you need ceil(13.2 ÷ 5) = 3 bags (about £42 at £14/bag).

Limits and assumptions

Follow the adhesive manufacturer’s coverage for your notch size and substrate. Estimate only — not a structural or waterproofing specification.

Frequently asked questions

Floor vs wall — same coverage?

Floors and uneven walls usually need more adhesive. Enter the lower (more conservative) coverage from the bag chart.

Does rapid-set change the bag count?

Volume maths is the same; pot life and open time differ, so mix smaller batches.

Why round bags up?

Running short mid-wall risks shade or batch mismatches. Leftover powder is cheaper than a second trip.

Is primer included?

No — buy primer separately when the substrate requires it.
