How much laminate do I need?

Laminate is sold in packs that each cover a stated area, so the buying question is room area plus cutting waste, divided by coverage per pack and rounded up. Measure length and width of each room (or the continuous open-plan zone), then add waste — often about 8–12% for straight lays, more for diagonals or bold patterns that force matching. Underlay, beading, thresholds and door trims are not in the pack count; budget those separately. Keep a spare pack if returns are awkward after the batch dyes. For broader floor coverage maths see the flooring calculator and soft finishes via the carpet calculator.

Worked example

A 4.2 × 3.5 m room is 14.7 m². With 10% waste ≈ 16.17 m². At 2.2 m² per pack you need 8 packs; at £24 each that is £192.

Limits and assumptions

Does not include underlay, trims or stair parts. Assumes rectangular rooms — L-shapes should be split and summed.

Frequently asked questions

How should I measure open-plan spaces?

Measure the full continuous floor you will lay as one area, or sum zones if you are changing direction between rooms.

When should waste go above 10%?

Diagonals, herringbone-style layouts, many doorways and large pattern repeats often need 12–15%.

Does click-lock versus glue change pack count?

No — fitting method changes labour, not coverage maths.

Can I use leftover packs on stairs?

Stair treads rarely match pack efficiency; calculate stairs separately and expect more waste.
