Part-time from a full-time salary

Many offers quote a full-time figure. This scales it to your contracted hours so part-time pay is clear before you accept. Check whether holiday, pension and benefits also pro-rate — cash salary is only one part of the package. Confirm the employer’s full-time baseline (often 35–40 hours); using the wrong denominator skews the result. Compressed hours usually follow contractual hours, not the number of days on site. Related: hourly to salary and take-home pay comparison. Sense-check lifestyle cost with effective hourly wage. Not employment or tax advice. Job shares should clarify how bank holidays and training days are split so neither partner is short-changed. Overtime for part-time staff may trigger sooner in the week than full-time peers — read the handbook. When comparing offers, convert both to hourly and to annual cash so days-per-week differences do not hide the truth. Worked example

Full-time £36,000 for 37.5 hours. You contract for 22.5 hours: salary ≈ 36000 × (22.5 ÷ 37.5) = £21,600. If HR quietly uses a 40-hour FTE baseline, the same hours would show £20,250 — always ask which FTE hours they use. Holiday days often pro-rate with the same fraction.

Limits and assumptions

Ignores London weighting, allowances and overtime. Benefits may not pro-rate linearly (some perks are all-or-nothing). Not a contract interpretation service.

Frequently asked questions

How is part-time salary usually calculated?

Full-time salary × (your hours ÷ full-time hours). Confirm the employer’s full-time baseline (often 35–40 hours).

Do holidays pro-rate too?

Statutory and contractual holiday often pro-rate with hours — check the offer letter.

What if I work compressed hours?

Salary usually follows contractual hours, not the number of days on site. Confirm with HR.

Are bonuses pro-rated?

Often yes, but schemes differ. Read the bonus policy rather than assuming the salary fraction.

How do I compare two part-time offers?

Convert both to hourly or to the same weekly hours, then compare take-home and commute.
