What is overtime worth?

Contracts differ on when overtime starts and which multiplier applies — time-and-a-half, double time, or plain additional hours. Enter the rules that match your payslip or handbook. This calculator estimates overtime pay from base rate, hours and multipliers. Salaried roles without an overtime clause may simply dilute effective hourly wage when extras are unpaid. It is not a substitute for checking your contract, union agreement or ACAS guidance. See also effective hourly wage when unpaid extras dilute pay, and salary to hourly for base rate conversion. Holiday pay interactions with regular overtime need HR or ACAS confirmation — this tool does not calculate holiday uplift. Roster patterns that mix plain time, enhanced nights and bank holidays need a line-by-line payslip check the first time you use a new multiplier. Managers approving overtime should know the cash cost before they say yes. If overtime becomes regular, ask HR how holiday pay is calculated rather than assuming this estimate covers it.

Worked example

Base £15/hour, 8 overtime hours at time-and-a-half: overtime pay = 8 × 15 × 1.5 = £180. If Saturday hours pay double, 4 hours add £120. A salaried colleague doing the same hours unpaid sees effective wage fall instead — model that on the effective hourly wage tool.

Limits and assumptions

Ignores tax banding on the payslip and pension on overtime unless you adjust. Shift premiums stacked with overtime need the exact contractual order. Not employment-law advice.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know which overtime multiplier applies?

Read your contract or staff handbook. Some roles pay plain time; others enhance nights and weekends differently.

Does overtime affect holiday pay?

It can, depending on how regular overtime is and current UK rules. Confirm with HR or ACAS — this tool does not calculate holiday uplift.

What if I am salaried with no overtime clause?

Additional hours may be unpaid. Model the effect on effective hourly wage rather than assuming a multiplier.

Are TOIL and overtime the same?

No. Time off in lieu is hours back; overtime is cash. Enter only the cash rules here.

How do I find my base hourly from salary?

Use salary to hourly, then apply contractual overtime multipliers.
