Estimate Amazon seller profit

Amazon take-home depends on referral fees, FBA fulfilment, storage and any ads you run — not just the buy-box price customers see. Paste figures from your fee preview rather than guessing from outdated blog posts, because category rates and size tiers change. Put returns, long-term storage and VAT adjustments into ‘other’ if you need them in the unit view. Peak Q4 storage and aged-inventory surcharges can erase a summer margin that looked fine in July. Sponsored Products attributed to the ASIN should sit in the ads field so contribution is not confused with organic buy-box wins. Cross-check with marketplace fee for a fee-only breakdown and product profit for a simpler non-Amazon model. Landed imports belong in cost via product landed cost. Estimates for planning only — not tax or Seller Central advice. Keep a scenario for coupon-heavy weeks separately from everyday pricing so you do not scale ads into a promotional margin hole. Revisit size-tier fulfilment fees when packaging changes the dimensions Amazon measures.

Worked example

Retail £24.99, product cost £8.50, referral about 15% (£3.75), FBA fulfilment £4.20, packaging already in cost, ads averaging £2.10 per unit. Profit ≈ 24.99 − 8.50 − 3.75 − 4.20 − 2.10 = £6.44 before storage. If monthly storage allocates another 40p per unit, contribution falls to about £6.04 — still workable, but a 10% coupon would consume most of that buffer.

Limits and assumptions

Fee previews differ from final disbursements when weight tiers or apparel size rules surprise you. Multi-channel fulfilment and remote fulfilment programmes need their own fee lines. Currency conversion on EU/UK migrations is not modelled. Not VAT advice.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find current Amazon fees?

Use Seller Central fee previews and the current referral fee schedule for your category and marketplace.

Should FBA and referral be separate fields?

Prefer separate so you can see which lever hurts margin. Combining them is fine for a quick check.

How do I treat FBA storage?

Average monthly storage per unit into the cost, or add peak-month storage when planning Q4 inventory.

Where do returns go?

Either reduce expected revenue by your return rate or add an average return-handling cost per unit sold.

Can I compare FBA with FBM?

Run two scenarios: FBA fulfilment versus your own postage and packing. Include your time if FBM labour is real.
