Shelf Bracket Spacing Calculator
Enter shelf length and number of brackets to see centre spacing.
Where do brackets go?
Even bracket spacing shares load and looks tidy. Measure shelf length, choose how many brackets (at least two), and set an end inset so the outer brackets sit under the board rather than flush with the tips. Centre spacing = (length − 2 × inset) ÷ (brackets − 1). Heavier loads need closer spacing and brackets rated for the weight — this tool places centres only; it does not certify load or wall-fixing strength. Mark centres lightly before drilling so a spirit level can keep the row true. For even gaps in slatted shelves or deck boards see board spacing.
Worked example
A 120 cm shelf with 3 brackets and 5 cm end insets has an inner span of 110 cm. Spacing between centres = 110 ÷ 2 = 55 cm.
Limits and assumptions
Not a structural load rating. Wall fixings, stud positions and bracket specs always win over even spacing aesthetics.
Frequently asked questions
Why inset from the ends?
Brackets under the outer few centimetres support the overhang and hide hardware from the shelf edge.
How many brackets do I need?
Follow the bracket manufacturer’s maximum spacing for your shelf material and load; then even out within that limit.
What if studs do not align?
Shift the whole pattern to hit studs, or use appropriate anchors — do not rely on plaster alone for heavy shelves.
Can I use two brackets on a long shelf?
Only if the span between them and the overhangs stay within the bracket’s rated spacing.
