How to calculate crochet gauge

Crochet gauge converts a counted swatch into stitches and rows per 10 cm, then scales to the width you want to make. Measure the swatch after blocking the way the finished piece will be blocked, count stitches across and rows up, and enter the measured width and height. The tool reports stitches per 10 cm, rows per 10 cm and a project stitch count for your target width. Hook size, yarn batch and tension all move gauge — re-swatch when any of them change. Estimate yarn after sizing with the yarn calculator or skein requirement.

Worked example

22 stitches over 10 cm → 22 stitches per 10 cm. For a 40 cm width → about 88 stitches.

Limits and assumptions

Assumes even tension across the swatch. Pattern repeats may need stitch counts rounded to motif size.

Frequently asked questions

What is gauge in crochet?

Gauge (tension) is how many stitches and rows you make in a set measurement — usually quoted per 10 cm or 4 inches — so garments land at the designed size.

Should I count chains or turning chains?

Follow the pattern’s gauge note; usually count stitches in the fabric body, not loose turning chains.

Metric or inches?

Use the site unit toggle; the maths normalises to centimetres internally for the per-10 cm readout.

My gauge is tighter than the pattern — what now?

Try a larger hook, or recalculate width stitch counts from your own gauge and accept a fabric change.
