Profit after a coupon
Coupons and voucher codes lift conversion but can erase contribution on thin-margin goods. Enter list price, unit cost and either a cash-off amount or a percent off; the tool takes the larger of the two discounts when both are set, computes discounted price, profit (discounted − cost) and margin on the discounted price. Model the code before you publish it — especially on low-ticket items where a fixed £5 off is a huge share of price. Stacking rules, payment fees and free-shipping add-ons are omitted unless you fold them into cost. Stress-test deeper cuts with discount profitability and the kept-order baseline in product profit.
Worked example
£40 list, £16 cost, £5 off → £35 discounted price, £19 profit, margin ≈ 54.3%.
Limits and assumptions
Ignores coupon stacking, channel payment fees and free-shipping costs unless included in the cost field. Single-unit view.
Frequently asked questions
Cash off versus percent — which wins if both are filled?
The calculator applies the larger discount of the cash amount and the percent-of-price amount.
How do I model a free-shipping coupon?
Put the carrier cost you still pay into cost (or run shipping-cost-per-order) — this page focuses on price discounts.
Does a new-customer-only code change the maths?
No — profit per redeemed order is the same; limit who can use the code in your shop settings.
When is the coupon too deep?
When profit after discount approaches zero or goes negative on your typical cost — stop cutting further.
